Understanding Load Shedding: How to Equip Your Home for Power Outages

Although we might be going through a break from load shedding right now, there is no way of knowing when it will strike again. Moreover, the chronic problems with electrical infrastructure in this country could leave you without power even if you are not currently experiencing load shedding. It is therefore vital for all homes to equip themselves with everything they need to keep them going during both planned and unexpected power outages. Buildit provides a simple expert’s guide to equipping your home for load shedding.

How to Get Your Home Ready for Loadshedding

Load shedding is an annoyance that all South Africans can do without, but one that we have to live with nonetheless. Make sure your home is load-shedding-proof with the following key tools and equipment:

 -      Invest in back-up power: Even if you can’t afford to go completely off the grid and power your entire house, get back-ups that will keep the essentials running – a few lights, computers and charges, screens, etc. You could go solar, or buy an battery-powered inverter, or just a small UPS to prevent your computer from losing data or crashing. Petrol or diesel back-up generators are also a great option.

-      Have some back-up lights on hand: Torches, rechargeable light bulbs and battery-powered lights can help you keep your house illuminated even when the neighbourhood is in darkness.

-      Switch to gas: Gas stoves and heaters ensure that you can still prepare meals, heat water and keep your house warm, regardless of whether you have electricity or not.

-      Insulate your home: The best way to keep your home consistently warm during the winter and cool during the summer is to seal and insulate the building effectively. Check that all doors and windows are properly insulated against the elements, and consider installing insulation materials in your ceiling.
