Your Growth Starts with a Home Renovation Strategy That’s Yours

A home renovation or expansion is serious project, and one that will take an investment of time and resources. The end result is always worth it, of course, but if you want to get to that point, you are going to need a plan – a strategy. What does a home renovation strategy look like? Well, that depends on you. It’s your home, so your growth starts with a strategy that’s yours. However, you may need some expert tips, both developing your renovation plan and carrying it out. How To Develop a Home Renovation Strategy

The reason a home renovation strategy is so personal is that it completely depends on the specifics of your home and what you want to do with it. The current state of your home, your renovation goals, your budget and deadlines will all determine how you approach renovation and growth. So if you want to develop a home renovation plan, we suggest that you follow these steps:

-      Define your goals: Start by assessing your needs. Where are the best opportunities for improvement and growth in your home? What is your vision for those places? How do you picture the final result? You can then create a wish list of the work you would like to do, and prioritise each item on your list. Your choice of what to do first will depend on what feels most pressing and what resources you have at your disposal.

-      Create a budget: Now that you know what you want to achieve, you will need to get an idea of how much it will cost. Get multiple quotes from builders and suppliers. Speak to at least three different contractors. Ask about hidden costs and make sure you cover all your bases. Once you have a basic figure, add a buffer of about 10-20% to make sure that you can cover any unexpected costs.

-      Develop a detailed plan: Now the real strategizing begins. At this point, you may want to consult with professionals – an architect, designer, or contractor, who can help you put your vision into practical, time-bound, material terms.

-      Prepare for the build: Before the project starts, make sure you are prepared for what is to come. Remember this is your home, and the weeks or months you will need to spend breaking part of it down to build it up again are likely to come with several stressors. Try to identify these beforehand and come up with a plan to manage them.

-      Give way to the professionals, while still keeping a close watch on the process: Once the project gets started, you need to take a step back and allow the contractors to do their work, but of course you still need to watch the process and provide feedback. This can be a difficult balance to strike, especially when it’s your own home.
